Finally, they're tapping the Bakken formation. As this starts to take off, maybe some of those who think we need to drill for oil in the ANWR will shut up. 8-) Drill, baby, drill? They are getting their wish. We are drilling.

There is possibly more oil to be had in the Bakken than in the ANWR, and it could be produced more quickly. We might see this oil lots faster than we would see oil from northern Alaska.

I have always thought the only reason the right wing wants to drill in Alaska is to tick off environmentalists anyway... by "beating them". I think they want to win some kind of psychological game over the left more than they want us to be more self-sufficient when it comes to energy. The Bakken formation should render that all moot, at least for a while.

It would still be nice to get ourselves weaned off of fossil fuels, though. I'm not holding my breath for that to happen, because there is too much money to be made from fossil fuels for anyone to change their minds and do things differently.

But at least we're tapping some of our own oil resources here in the "lower 48". It's about time. This formation is huge, and it ought to help us to at least be slightly less dependent on *foreign* oil, or to build up our own reserves. It will be interesting to see just how many jobs this new "oil boom" can create.

I'm happy for North Dakota. They finally have something to get excited about besides...well, they finally have something to be excited about.

Snave, I think a desire to beat the political left and environmentalists is one aspect of Big Oil and Republicans' demands to drill in ANWR. But the main thing is, they want it all. When N.D. oil is tapped out, they'll be right back after ANWR.

For that reason and so many others, as you said, we need to find other energy sources.

This confirms that there are plenty of jobs out there. Those OWS slackers simply don't WANT to work :)

Also, in central Washington (and other places, I'm sure) there are farmworker jobs going begging. We've scared away all them illegal Meskins and now there's nobody to work in the fields and orchards.

It made the local news that Wenatchee apple growers are offering $150 a day to apple pickers. It's become the latest rightwing talking point. "Quit whining about inequality and get your ass over to Wenatchee and get a job!"

Right, so how long does an apple harvest last? Lessee, travel to Wenatchee, motel room for X-number of nights, meals and incidentals. For what, maybe a week?

For that, someone who's on unemployment would have to give up jobless pay, then go back and sign up and jump through hoops all over again after the harvest, after having netted surprisingly modest money.

For a Wenatchee teenager or young single, it could be a decent deal. Otherwise, not so much.
