SCOTT BATEMAN CARTOON

My mom was just telling me how her dad was an air raid warden in WWII. If they were worried about an air raid, he made sure that everyone had their lights turned.

Now they lived in a very small city at the time, so the liklihood of being a target was extremely unlikely, so I asked her why they needed to worry about that in Bay City, Texas. She said that in those days the assumption was that everyone should sacrifice jointly. So there is probably something to this cartoon.

Still, I am glad they got rid of the draft, although tax dollars shouldn't go to mercenraies. If they can't get people to volunteer for a war, they probably should not be having the war.

I've always been amazed that more military folks haven't spoken up about the fact that the people making the plans haven't served (or served in combat). I just think that combat experience does a great deal to dampen the temptation to send kids off to unnecessary wars. Or at least it should.

Just glad to see Powell coming out and admitting his obvious shame over his role in the whole affair.
