CHANGING SOME BUYING HABITS?
What percent of campaign donations go toward Democrats? What percent to Republicans? Iwasn't looking for the amounts of monies donated as much as I was the percentage of the amounts given... i.e. to what extent is this company pro-left or pro-right?

I find this list of GOP supporters extremely disappointing, particularly about the Seattle Mariners... they have been my favorite baseball team in my favorite major league sport since the late 70s. Our family is insured through AllState for both home and automobiles, our credit card is from Capital One, we have investments with Charles Schwab, our phone/internet service is through Verizon and my new cell phone is a Motorola, we get our groceries at Safeway and/or Albertson's, I drink Pepsi products, our cats eat Iams cat food, I like to eat at Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill, I like to drink Heineken beer, and as millions of other lefties do, I rely on UPS and FedEx to deliver packages for me. Diebold builds quite a few of the electronic voting machines... sad, sad. The computer I'm at right now is an HP, and the one downstains is a Dell.
Then again, I do like to eat at Arby's and Benihana. I like to shop for books at Powell's and at Barnes and Noble. Google is my preferred search engine, and we're Netflix users. Our cats use Fresh Step litter, and if they miss the box, we rely on Pine-Sol to cover the stink. Occasionally I have a Starbucks drink. Expedia has done well by us for our travel needs, and I love wearing my Levis. I have a couple of pairs of Skechers shoes, and we stock up at Costco when we are in Kennewick, WA so we won't be as tempted to shop at the Wal-Mart here in La Grande... so it isn't ALL bad!
5 Comments:
Excellent information. On a similar note, (well, sort of similar): When you shop at a local non-franchise business, 60 cents of every dollar you spend stays in the community. When you shop at a Big Box store, only SIX cents of each dollar stays in the community. Home Depot anyone?
Thanks, Tom! There has been talk of a Home Depot coming to La Grande, and I'm tending to hope it doesn't make it. I understand from someone who has the inside info that it was a for-sure deal until Home Depot decided the property they had originally been looking at wouldn't have enough room for parking... and then the next property they were after supposedly didn't work because the property owner was being difficult. That's fine with me. Even though Home Depot would add some jobs to our community and they tend to treat their employees a bit better than Wal-Mart (at least I think they do), we already have some good local hardware and builders supply stores that I would hate to see go out of business.
La Grande does have a Bi-Mart store, which provides a good alternative to Wal-Mart and Rite Aid. We also have a good farmer's market with excellent local produce every Tuesday evening and Saturday morning in the town square.
Sadly, our Wal-Mart is expanding into a "Super Wal-Mart". Once that happens, and locals can get sucked in there to buy groceries as well as get an oil change, gasoline, a haircut and other things, I think our Albertson's will probably go under, leaving just Wal-Mart and Safeway for groceries. We have a couple of oil-change places in town, and I am guessing one of those will probably go out of business because Wal-Mart will be able to offer the same service for less money. Same may end up applying for a few hair-cutting establishments. Our town now has TWO Starbucks outlets, one in the Safeway store and now a new one, at one of the freeway interchanges. I haven't been to the new one, and don't plan to go there... La Grande already has three or four local coffee stands that make good coffee drinks.
Sigh... this kind of crap doesn't look like it will end any time soon, if at all.
Wow, my parents eat at Cracker Barrell all the time. :-(
BuyBlue is one of my most visited websites.
There are a ton of true disappointments on the red side, but easily the scariest one on there is Diebold...especially after hearing this recent news -
From OPEN VOTING FOUNDATION:
“Diebold has made the testing and certification process practically irrelevant,” according to Dechert. “If you have access to these machines and you want to rig an election, anything is possible with the Diebold TS -- and it could be done without leaving a trace. All you need is a screwdriver.” This model does not produce a voter verified paper trail so there is no way to check if the voter’s choices are accurately reflected in the tabulation.
I'm sorry to put it this bluntly, but this seems like so much stuff and nonsense to me. Whenever I shop somewhere, I don't give two squats about which candidates they attempted to buy. I care about the service and quality of merchandise I received for the price, and I will pay a premium for both. Unless I find a company is supporting bigots, fascists, or communists, I really won't care all that much. Do you want to know a way to guarantee more of your money goes to causes, candidates or parties you support? Try donating to the individual parties, candidates, or causes as a separate transaction. That way, you'll know that 100% of whatever you donate goes to that party, instead of paying for goods and services. Give me a D! Give me a U! Give me an H!
